Academics & Programs

Early Childhood | Ages 3-6
8:15 AM - 2:45 PM
Our Early Childhood classrooms take advantage of our beautiful wooded campus, hiking on our adjacent Ijams Nature Center trail and enjoying lessons and picnic lunches outside whenever possible. We believe that an early love of place and an appreciation for nature not only creates inner peace within the child but sows the seeds of stewardship which lasts a lifetime.

Lower Elementary | Grades 1-2
8 AM - 3:15 PM
Our Lower Elementary classrooms foster students ages 6 - 8.
Lessons in our Lower Elementary classrooms are given in both small groups and individually giving each student ample opportunity to express interests, ask questions and make meaningful contributions.

Upper Elementary | Grades 3-5
8 AM - 3:15 PM
Our Upper Elementary classrooms foster students who have a strong feeling of connectedness to all humanity. They have an appreciation of the contributions of their ancestors and of the diverse cultures of the countries and the world. They are well prepared to be contributing members of society.

Middle School | Grades 6-8
8 AM - 3:15 PM
Our Middle School classrooms foster students who need to work, to be challenged, to be empowered, to develop a personal vision, to be adaptable. Maria Montessori envisioned work for adolescents designed to respond to the sensitivities of this age: personal dignity, social justice & belonging.
Our Philosophy...
Each child has natural abilities — strengths & challenges.
Montessori education assures that children learn all the “necessary” information for success in future schooling, while giving them the opportunity to develop optimally both their individual strengths and gain coping skills to work with their challenges.
Plan of Development Theory
Children have particular needs, many which vary according to their developmental stage (planes of development.)
For example, all children need an ordered, loving environment. They all must do things themselves to learn best how to do it. They all also need respect as capable, independent workers. Additionally, Primary children need real learning experiences for their absorbent mind and they need opportunities to build skills when they are most able and willing to learn (sensitive periods).
Elementary children need opportunities to use and challenge their reasoning minds and imaginations. They also need opportunities to collaborate and discover what is “right” and “wrong”. Montessori education provides what children need when they need it. This supports each child’s optimal development.
Each child learns best at his/her own style and pace.
Montessori provides the opportunity to learn from different senses and with different approaches. Additionally, multi-age classrooms naturally allow children to develop at their own pace without stigma both for advanced learners and learners with particular challenges. Older children reinforce what they have learned by giving lessons to younger children. The result is a deep sense of caring and respect for each other.
Learning ultimately belongs to each child.
Each child ultimately determines what to learn (not memorize and forget), who to become, and how to fit into society. Each child learns best what he/she wants to learn. Montessori education creates an environment where children want to learn — this supports optimal individual learning.
What is Montessori education?
Montessori education is designed to help children with their task of inner construction as they grow from childhood to maturity. It succeeds because it draws its principles from the natural development of the child. The inherent flexibility allows the method to adapt to the needs of the individual, regardless of the level of ability, learning style or social maturity. The Montessori approach offers a broad vision of education as an aid to life. It is the task of each child to develop himself into as complete a human being as possible. Nature has endowed young children with absorbent minds and acute sensitivities, allowing them to acquire certain kinds of knowledge and abilities more wholly before age six, than at any time later life. How successfully each child accomplishes this task in the early years has great bearing not only on the amount of knowledge and skill he will have at his command in later years, but, more importantly, the attitudes toward himself, his world, and learning that he embraces.
Montessori education is based on a heart-felt respect for this task of the child, and on a careful observation of the process by which it is accomplished. What we offer is a thoughtful response to this natural unfolding so that, in each case, it can be as successful and complete as possible. Discovering the joys of learning and developing social and intellectual discipline lay the foundation for a happy, productive life. The children develop an appreciation for the world while becoming responsible human beings and active members of a harmonious society.Montessori education achieves these goals, by supporting the following truths about learning, which are based on scientific observation.
What is Mead Montessori School's mission?
Thanks for asking! We seek to create and sustain an optimum Montessori educational environment to enable each child to realize his or her richest potential for learning and to become an independent, self-motivated and contributing member of the world community.
Our mission is to offer children an education that encourages intellectual, physical, spiritual and moral development, which prepares students for academic excellence, lifelong learning and responsible, caring lives.
These goals are met through the guidance and support of the pedagogical standards set forth by the Association Montessori International (AMI). AMI was founded by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1929, to protect the integrity of her work, and has remained the international authority on Montessori education and practice.
Dr. Montessori’s approach is designed to help children with the task of inner construction as they grow from childhood to maturity. It succeeds because it draws its principles from the natural development of the child. Inherent flexibility allows the method to adapt to the needs of the individual, regardless of the level of ability, learning style, or maturity. The children at Mead Montessori School are inspired to learn with wonder and confidence. Each child is offered a prepared environment that includes a mixed-age group of children, an adult guide, and specifically designed Montessori educational materials. The trained guide is an artful organizer of the experiences for the child, encouraging discovery, process and practice.
Equipped with a rich set of lessons in a variety of curriculum areas, the adults engage in constant and ongoing observation of each child’s abilities and interests. The foundation of the Montessori program is in responding to these observations with appropriate lessons, encouragement of the child’s concentration, and respect for the child’s natural drive for independence.

"Mead Montessori is a magical school. We knew it was the right school for our family the moment we walked through the door. My daughter started at 5 & I couldn't be happier with our decision.
Mead provides a true Montessori learning environment coupled with caring teachers that not only provide a great education, but also genuinely care about the well-being of each child. My son will start at Mead next year and we hope to be a part of the Mead Family for years to come."
